Utility Poles in Mill Creek

The Snohomish County PUD is working with Puget Sound Energy (PSE) on PSE’s installation of wireless communication equipment on utility poles and streetlights. This equipment will support PSE’s deployment of its Meter Upgrade project, which will update PSE’s gas meters in Snohomish County from Automatic Meter Reading (AMR) technology to Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI). The PSE installations are not connected to the PUD’s grid modernization effort or the PUD AMI work that is planned in the coming years.

The installation includes about 1,400 AMI devices installed on PUD poles and streetlights, with an additional 400 devices installed inside ground pedestals and connected to a PUD padmount transformer. The devices will be installed throughout the PUD service area, with the greatest concentrations in the more populated areas in South Snohomish County, primarily Lynnwood, Mill Creek and Mountlake Terrace.

When is the installation being completed?
The devices will be installed starting in December 2018, with projected completion in these Snohomish County communities in early 2019.

Who will do the installations?
The PUD will use its crews to install the AMI device and, when needed, will use contractors to support the installation work. No pole digging or pole replacements are expected.

Who will pay for this work?
As part of the  PUD's regular joint use program, PSE has signed an agreement to utilize PUD's poles, and it will be paying for all installation costs as well as ongoing annual usage fees.
