The Mill Creek Police Department recently selected Julia McCauley, a second grader at Mill Creek Elementary, as its honorary Chief for A Day. Chief Greg Elwin and members of the Mill Creek Police Department visited Julia’s class to announce her appointment and award her with her badge.

“I'm super excited to share this opportunity with Julia and I can't wait to have her help me lead the Police Department,” said Mill Creek Police Chief Greg Elwin.

Chief for a Day is a statewide program hosted bi-annually by the Washington State Criminal Justice Training Commission and celebrates the lives of children who have been diagnosed with a chronic medical condition. The mission is to provide these children with a day of fun that does not focus on their illness.

This is Mill Creek’s first year to participate in Chief for a Day and McCauley will be making ceremonial appearances in the community throughout the next several months.

“This is a great opportunity for the Police department to be involved in another aspect of community engagement, taking part in an awesome program that recognizes one of our kids and gives everyone a chance to recharge their positive batteries,” Elwin said.

McCauley’s first official appearance will be at the City’s Eggstravaganza event at Heatherwood Middle School on March 31, where the two Chiefs will meet and greet the public, followed by a City Council introduction on April 3.

The young chief will be part of the Memorial Day festivities as well as other summer events, including National Night Out on Aug. 7. She also will participate in the 2018 Chief for a Day Celebration to be held at the Washington State Police Academy on Aug. 16, along with other “Chiefs” and “Sheriffs” from around Washington State.

McCauley is a resident of Mill Creek’s Cottonwood neighborhood, where she resides with her mother and father, Ilona and Micah, and older sister Alexa.
