What problems is North Creek facing?

North Creek is on the Washington State Department of Ecology's impaired waters list due to high levels of fecal coliform and low dissolved oxygen levels during the summer.

Fecal Coliform Bacteria
Fecal coliform bacteria in water may indicate the presence of pathogenic (disease-causing) bacteria and viruses.  Pet waste, other animal wastes, failing septic systems, and fertilizers can all contribute fecal coliform bacteria.  Bacteria levels in North Creek exceed Washington State standards, thus increasing the risk of illness after contact in the water.

Low Dissolved Oxygen Levels
Low dissolved oxygen levels also affect fish that are swimming through our creeks to the Sammamish River.
Plant debris, food waste, and some chemical wastes fall into a category of water pollutants known as oxygen demanding substances.  If dissolved oxygen levels in water become too low, aquatic animals can become stressed or die.  Salmon and trout are at particular risk because they need high dissolved oxygen levels to survive.
