Oct. 4 Workshop Helps Neighborhoods Be Prepared for Emergencies

Make a plan graphic
Emergencies don’t often provide enough time to create and implement an action plan. A free Map Your Neighborhood event at City Hall in Mill Creek on Oct. 4 will help people develop individual and neighborhood plans to be prepared for emergencies.

“As seen with the recent hurricanes, people had a couple days in which to plan for an impending natural disaster,” said Mill Creek Police Chief Greg Elwin. “In the scheme of things, that’s not very much time to put a plan in action – and yet it is more time than people often get. Our Map Your Neighborhood workshop will help people plan in advance and take steps now that will help them and others survive until help arrives in an emergency situation.”

The 90-minute Map Your Neighborhood workshop covers the first nine steps to take immediately following a disaster and teaches people how to work with their neighbors to identify safety hazards, including gas explosions, potential fires, water main shutoffs and other safety concerns. Neighborhoods that are prepared for emergencies and disaster situations can save lives, reduce the severity of injuries and trauma, and reduce property damage.

The workshop is scheduled on Oct. 4 from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Mill Creek City Hall South, Council Chambers, 15728 Main St. in Mill Creek. Interested parties should register in advance.

As part of National Preparedness Month, additional information about emergency preparedness is available through FEMA at www.ready.gov/publications, including publications in other languages.
