Mill Creek Police to Conduct Crosswalk Emphasis Exercise

Is that a police officer or a pedestrian?

That’s a question drivers might be asking soon. To remind drivers to be observant at crosswalks, the Mill Creek Police Traffic Safety Unit will conduct crosswalk emphasis during the upcoming weeks.

The emphasis will have an officer in plain, bright clothing, standing at a crosswalk somewhere in Mill Creek attempting to cross. If a vehicle does not stop, when the officer begins crossing, an additional uniformed officer will stop the violator. This operation will not bait drivers and will strictly follow Washington State Law.

Many times, drivers are distracted, in a hurry, or don’t know the law regarding pedestrians. As a reminder, Washington State’s Crosswalk Law stipulates:

  • Vehicles must stop if a pedestrian is in their half of the roadway.
  • Vehicles must stop if a pedestrian is within one lane of their half of the roadway.
  • Once a pedestrian is beyond one lane of the half of the roadway, the vehicles may go.
