Natural gas leak shuts down Mill Creek neighborhood

Press Release from Snohomish County Fire District 7

At 12:07 pm, Fire District 7 was dispatched to a report of a gas leak outside at the intersection of Village Green Drive and 155th St SE. When crews arrived there was a strong odor of natural gas in the area. It was determined that a two-inch diameter gas line was struck by a contractor.

Village Green Drive was closed to thru traffic while crews worked to secure the line. Puget Sound Energy arrived on scene and worked to secure the gas leak as Fire District 7 monitored gas levels. Mill Creek Police Department and Public Works rerouted traffic. It took crews over two hours to dig to locate and secure the gas leak. During that time citizens were encouraged to stay indoors and close windows and doors.

Once the leak was secured, fire personnel continued to check the gas levels and determined it to be safe. Crews then were able to reopen the road.

Everett Public Schools held one of their busses at Jackson High School until the road was reopened. Parents were notified of the delay.

Infosource, a sub-contractor for Puget Sound Energy, is currently on site to repair the gas line and install a temporary sidewalk. Village Green Drive will be down to one lane, alternating traffic until it is repaired. This work may continue into the evening. We want citizens living in the area to know that the smell of the gas will linger, but there is in no cause for concern.

Although 811 was contacted and utilities were marked prior to the contractor digging, this is a good reminder for citizens to respect the markers they set.
