Mill Creek Police Offer 8-Week Citizen Police Academy

The Mill Creek Police will hold a free Citizen Police Academy running May 17 through July 12 to introduce members of the community to police work. The weekly classes will take place from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. in the community room at City Hall North, 15720 Main Street in Mill Creek.

The course is open to Mill Creek residents, as well as others in surrounding communities, who are 18 years of age and older. Interested parties are encouraged to apply quickly due to limited space. Background checks are required due to the sensitive nature of police work. Applications are online at cityofmillcreek.com/citizensacademy.

“This eight-week program is designed to help people learn what it is that police officers do on a daily basis and to interact with the department and its officers,” said Mill Creek Police Sergeant Stan White. “Public safety services have more depth than most people know, so this will be a great opportunity for those looking at law enforcement opportunities.”

Topics range from criminal law, K-9, traffic enforcement and patrol procedures to special weapons and tactics. There will be several instructors from various agencies.

The long-term goal of the program is to establish a citizens patrol from select members who have gone through the academy. Instructors would identify potential citizens patrol members based on aptitude in the course, as well as adherence to the City of Mill Creek’s STAR values of service, teamwork, accountability and respect.
